Before your first visit to us, you may want to do some reading and find out more about various skin diseases and problems as well as skin cancer so we have prepared a range of fact sheets and journal articles for you to read at your convenience.
To allow for proper examination of your facial skin if needed please ensure all make up is removed well before the consultation.
At your first visit the doctor will discuss your problem. With rashes and other skin blemishes your history is very important and a full list of your medications is very helpful. A full skin examination including the body is usually undertaken. As many patients have no idea they may have a skin cancer it is possible that a suspicious spot maybe found even though you were totally unaware of it.
If the diagnosis is uncertain a skin biopsy may be recommended. Lumps and bumps may need to be removed and skin cancer always needs treatment. Usually you will be booked for surgery on another day. Very occasionally small procedures may be done at the time of the consultation but this in infrequent.
If you require cryotherapy (freezing treatment of sun spots, superficial skin cancers, warts etc) this may be done at the time of the first visit with your consent. Cryotherapy results in blisters that may take 5-10 days to heal.
We will also discuss with you aftercare needs of any surgery together with the risks and any potential complications and the best ways to minimise these risks. For some medical and cosmetic problems you may be referred to another specialised clinic for further tests or treatment. On occasion referral to another specialist is required. This will be discussed with you at your first visit.
